My very own law clerk?
This is a weird feeling. Our firm hires a number of summer clerks every year, but this year we have one intern who is unpaid, and is working here for school credit only. The firm sent all of us an email letting us know that he is available for anyone's research needs, even junior associates if we got clearance from Intern's supervising attorneys.
Wow! Because I am currently summaryjudgmenting on 3 different cases at the same time, all of which involve the same theories of liability by the plaintiffs, I thought Intern would be the perfect person to do some research grunt work for my motions. So I sent in my request to Supervisor, and he approved.
Intern came into my office and asked me questions about my project this morning. It was incredibly weird for me and it took all I had to keep from bursting out laughing as we talked. It's just that, every time I looked at him and the bewildered look on his face, I saw myself with the very same look on my face in recent memory. Oh let's face it, I still have that look on my face a few times a week.
Within a few days, he'll have a memorandum of law for my review, and the weirdness will continue. Review a memorandum prepared by an intern, for moi? I'm used to reading memos from classmates and fellow associates to give friendly second opinions. Reading one that I "assigned" is a different matter altogether.
Anyway, I'm thankful for Intern's availability. Whatever his research produces, it will be helpful for all 3 of my MSJs. And if I find it unsatisfactory I'll tear him to pieces... just kidding, obviously. (I think).

The worst part is when you get back crap - I always feel terrible, as if I didn't explain it right, which is probably true. But how do you gently tell someone, 'this is all wrong?' I hope you gave this poor intern, who probably has never seen a memorandum of law, an exemplar?
He asked me specific questions (which always impresses me) about the format I wanted the memo in. If it's crap, I probably won't give back any negative feedback unless one of the partners actually asks me for it. And the crap won't really hurt because I need citations more than I need substantive analysis, for this particular issue.
